Whether you are a seasoned Trail Runner or just starting out, these 5 events around South Africa are guaranteed to challenge you with bags of fun.

1. HEX Sky Run, Matroosberg Peak, Western Cape

In the year 1768, after the first farmhouses had been built in the Hex River Valley, one of the occupants was a beautiful girl named Eliza Meiring. It is said that her beauty was so profound that she set any would-be suitor the initial task of bringing her a disa from the inaccessible precipices of the 2249-m Matroosberg, the highest peak of the Hex River Valley. This almost impossible task was set to deter unwanted admirers.

However, one young man whom Eliza favoured set out to surprise her by securing a disa. His daring attempt ended badly as he fell and was killed. Her shock deranged the fair Eliza and she had to be locked in an upper room of the house. One night whilst trying to force a window open in order to escape she slipped and was killed.

It is said that her spirit has wandered the peaks of Matroosberg ever since. She was called The Witch of Hex River Valley.

2. Roi du Mont Rochelle, Mont Rochell Reserve, Franschhoek, Western Cape

Franschhoek in the Western Cape is famous among overseas tourists for world-class wine and mouth-watering cuisine. There is a well-kept secret in the town too, and that is the Mont Rochelle Reserve. Set above the town the Reserve features some tough peaks to climb and single track that seems to go on forever. The Roi du Mont Rochelle tackles two of the prominent peaks in the Reserve, namely Perdekop and Du Toits Peak. The 22km route will give you about 1400m of vertical ascent and about the same in descent.  The event will start and finish at the award-winning estate, Haute Cabriere, so spectators and supporters are sure to enjoy the day as well.
